About Glasgow.

Glasgow is situated on the West side of Scotland along the River Clyde, and is the largest city in the country. It is also home to the third largest population of any city in the British Isles. Natives of Glasgow are known as Glaswegians, which is also the name given to the local dialect.

Glasgow has long been an area of settlement, and was first populated in prehistoric times. The University of Glasgow was founded in the city in 1451 and is today one of the most prestigious universities in Britain, with an international reputation for teaching and research excellence. During the 1990's Glasgow experienced a economic resurgence with an increase in investment in tourism into the city. It was at this time that a trend for moving back into the city centre emerged and Glasgow has gone from strength to strength ever since.

The climate in Glasgow is not like the rest of Scotland due to its position in the country. Being situated on the west lowlands, currents flow up the Clyde estuary from the Atlantic, giving it much warmer temperature. It is also sheltered by the Clyde Hills behind it and on the whole this means that Glasgow has a very similar temperature to the north of England. Glasgow's many parks and trees are best seen in the spring when the weather is mild and cool, and many of the plants are flourishing. During the summer months the winds generally hit Glasgow from a westerly direction and the weather is either wet and mild or warm and sunny. Like the rest of western Scotland, rain can be chilling and is often strong during the winter months.

Glasgow city centre is actually very similar to American cities in that it is based on a grid system. In the heart of the city centre lies George Square, and is the location of many statues and home to Glasgow City Council. There are plenty of places to shop and the main centres are the St. Enoch Centre and Buchanan Galleries. The city is also home to a branch of the popular London department store, Selfridges.
